When She Woke Book Review

I want to find more books like this because it is so eye opening and just mind blowing. This book was written by Hillary Jordan and was published in 2011. I’ve only just come across it and just finished it. I wish I had known about it sooner but I feel like as I get older and learn more of the world, these books resonate more with me.

Anyways, lets get into the book! This is a dystopian novel and takes place in future America. People are punished for their crimes there with ‘chroming’. Their skin is dyed a certain colour depending on what crime they commit. The main character in this is red which means murder. She got an abortion. This is obviously a very controversial topic and not everyone would like it. It doesn’t go into huge details about the procedure, just her life after with memories of the before.

It is fascinating to see how things get handled in this novel and just mind blowing how this could actually happen. In some places, abortion is illegal and there are women that have to go else where or face the dangers of attempting to have the procedure done by someone where it could end up with them becoming very sick, or dying.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I think everyone should read this book and learn that not every situation is cut and dry. Not everything is black and white, there is a grey zone and you do not know everyone’s story. There is no room for judgement yet there is so much judgement coming from the others in the novel. The character is on a path to self-discovery and questioning all the values they once held so closely. She starts to question everything and I think that’s really important. Her development as a character is amazing.

I absolutely loved this book and I want to read more like it so if you have any suggestions, please let me know! Have you guys read this one?
